Coming around a bend in the road, I was met with an incredible combination of oranges, reds, yellows, and greens all dancing together. On the color wheel, these are complimentary colors, here composed in a progressive composition. These blankets of color appear as though the flowers have clearly staked their claim to their naturally formed plots. Executed 100% with a palette knife, the work features sculptural, heavy-bodied strokes of oil paint up to a quarter-inch thick. The texture is so immediate that it is intentionally framed without glass; when you see it, you want to walk up and touch the ridges of the paint—and this is encouraged. The challenge to bring both that intensity of color and sculptural texture to the canvas was a long process. It remains one of my personal favorite works and has hung in my own home since its completion.
