In this intimate study along Calistoga Road, I wanted to condense the monumental energy of the Mayacamas terrain into a small, jewel-like canvas. Bold, sculptural strokes of teal and violet mark the distant mountain ridge, contrasting sharply against a fiery band of saffron and persimmon resting across the valley floor. Touches of yellow ochre ignite with an amber-flame couleur de soleil, while a rich, sweeping strike of claret grounds the foreground in the deep, resonant tones of the wine country. Thick impasto layers bring immediate, tactile life to the canvas, capturing a fleeting pocket of intense autumn light before the sun dips behind the hills.
