Inspired by the morning light in Steven Kidd’s dawn photography, this raw, primitive Impressionist painting captures California poppies awakening as the dark night relinquishes to the dawn. Unbound by literal precision, I sculpted the canvas with heavy, intentional impasto—building thick, textured layers of cadmium red, fiery tangerine, and marigold that feel almost three-dimensional alongside tightly wrapped, unbloomed buds nestled in deep cobalt and emerald shadows. Set under a soft horizon of slate-blue and lilac, these dew-laden, unfolding forms stretch upward, capturing the tactile energy, emotion, and unrefined essence of an Impressionist view of the morning light.
